| There's
nothing more vital to the success of a breeding operation
than choosing the right stallion for a mare. Not only must
the mating produce a colt or filly with commercial appeal...it's
also necessary to have a well-made individual, whether to
command top prices at auction or race with success.
When
advising clients on matings, Brinkerhoff Bloodstock considers
not only stallions that will have yearling market "sizzle"
two years down the road, but stallions that also blend well
with the mare to improve any of the mare's conformation faults.
Brinkerhoff
Bloodstock reviews pedigree information on the mare herself
to see how her family has crossed with certain sire lines;
studies the success potential of a cross with a particular
stallion; and most importantly, personally inspects both the
mare and the stallion to produce the best possible conformation
in the resulting foal.
The
goal? Quite simply to produce a correct and well-built individual
that has the potential to sell for top dollar and become a
stakes winner.
Last
year alone a BBS mating success story in the Standardbred
market came about after Bruce recommended that the mare Knickers
Hanover be bred to Credit Winner in 2006. The resulting foal,
the filly Questionablecredit, was hammered down at the 2008
Lexington Selected Yearling Sale for $175,000. Bruce also
recommended the mating that produced recent $400,000-winner
Beachy Girl.
On
the Thoroughbred side, Bruce has recommended matings to Tapit
(prior to his siring success with Breeders Cup winner and
Champion Juvenile Filly Stardom Bound), Lemon Drop Kid (in
his early years at a lower stud fee), and to newcomer Bandini.
